Common Air Conditioning Problems During Hot Weather
Check cooling mode, airflow and controls safely in hot weather. Recognise indoor leaks, persistent icing and electrical warning signs needing expert help.

Air conditioning faults are especially inconvenient when a room is already hot. Some apparent problems come from settings or restricted airflow; others need an engineer. A few careful observations can help distinguish them without turning troubleshooting into unsafe repair work.
Keep the model details and user manual available. Instructions vary, and an online checklist cannot replace the manufacturer’s warnings. If there is smoke, a burning smell, sparks or repeated electrical tripping, stop using the equipment and seek appropriate professional help.
In this guide
Check the mode before assuming a fault
Confirm that cooling is selected rather than fan-only, heating or a programme that no longer matches your needs. Check the setpoint, timer and controller batteries where relevant. A fan circulating warm room air is not evidence that the refrigeration system is cooling.
Allow any normal start-up delay described in the manual. Repeatedly switching power off and on can interfere with protective sequences and does not establish a diagnosis. On a multi-split, another room’s heating request may conflict with cooling; check the system’s documented mode restrictions.
Look for restricted airflow
Move curtains and furniture away from indoor inlets and outlets. If the manual permits user filter cleaning, switch off and isolate the unit as instructed and follow the specified method. Do not remove covers beyond the user-accessible parts or wash filters that are not designed for it.
Outside, observe whether objects or vegetation block the unit, without reaching into fans or dismantling guards. The government’s inspection guidance explains how obstructed heat exchange can reduce performance. Roof or high-level access should be left to suitably equipped professionals.
Distinguish high demand from failure
Strong sunlight, open doors, cooking and extra occupants can increase cooling demand. A system may take longer to reach its target during unusually demanding conditions. Shading and reducing avoidable heat gains can help, but do not assume every weak-cooling complaint is simply the weather.
Record whether the problem affects one room or all connected rooms, when it began and whether airflow changed. If performance remains poor under normal settings, arrange repair assessment. Selecting the lowest temperature repeatedly will not repair an underlying fault.
Treat indoor dripping and ice seriously
Indoor water leaks can indicate drainage problems or other faults. Stop using the affected unit if water may damage the property or reach electrical components, and keep clear of wet electrical equipment. Do not pour bleach, drain cleaner or boiling water into the unit.
Ice on an indoor cooling coil is not something to chip away or melt with improvised heat. Switch the affected system off as instructed and seek advice. Outdoor water can be normal during heating defrost, but that does not explain away indoor leaking during summer cooling.
Report sounds, smells and fault codes
Some airflow and refrigerant sounds are normal, but a new persistent grinding, rattling or unusual smell needs attention. Note the displayed code exactly, along with operating mode and which units were running. Photographs taken from a safe position can help explain the symptom.
Do not open electrical compartments, bypass safety devices or try refrigerant top-ups. Manufacturer service documents are engineer references, not DIY instructions. Refrigerant loss needs investigation; it is not a normal consumable that should simply be replenished whenever cooling seems weak.
Arrange help with useful information
Provide the model number, symptoms, fault code, service history and access details when contacting the team. Explain if water damage or a vulnerable occupant makes the situation urgent. Appointment availability and any priority response need direct confirmation within the business’s Monday–Friday working arrangements.
For homes in Welwyn Garden City, our maintenance service can discuss ongoing care after the immediate issue is addressed. A clear record helps the engineer investigate efficiently without promising a remote diagnosis or a guaranteed same-day fix.
